Friday Supper Club: The BlackHeathens

  • Avalon Restaurant 18 Katoomba Street Katoomba, NSW, 2780 Australia (map)

Featuring Bruce Johnson (Trumpet and Flugelhorn), George Gerontakos (Double Bass), Joel Fox (Guitar), and Kristina Frazer (Vocals), The BlackHeathens will take you back in time to experience all that is gorgeous and grand about the Jazz era and beyond, with their lush, big band sound.

About The BlackHeathens
Seperately, each member of The BlackHeathens had been busy making and playing music in the Blue Mountains and beyond in a range of styles and with a variety of musicians for too many years to count. But then, not so long ago, they decided to make something special, together.

During the period of relative inactivity arising from the pandemic, they formed and workshopped the Johnston, Gerontakos, Fox Trio to include Pop(ular), Fusion, Traditional, Swing and Latin, while maintaining a central interest in all things jazz.

A little later, the JGF Trio asked Kristina Frazer, a mountains chanteuse, to join their band of merry men, and together, they became The BlackHeathens.

Bruce Johnson: Trumpet and Flugelhorn
Bruce Johnson has played trumpet with bands including those led by Graeme Bell, Ray Price, Paul Furniss, Tom Baker, Dick Hughes, and Blue Mountains local Steve Jewell, as well as leading his own groups, and support for visitors ranging from Kenny Ball to Stan Getz. He has worked with bands in the UK, Scandinavia and Russia, recent examples of his work can be heard with the extraordinary Bulgarian singer Lubena Nova, online at ‘Fig Fable’.

George Gerontakos: Bass
With a career encompassing classical, jazz and world music, George has been a regular performer at jazz festivals throughout Australia as well as with numerous lineups in his home in the Blue Mountains. If you need a bass player, George is your "go to" 'cause there's nothing he can't do!

Joel Fox: Guitar
Get used to hearing the name Joel Fox! Joel is a local lad hailing from just over the mountains, and already, at his tender age, he has played many styles in a variety of line-ups. He is a quietly confident musician, with real gift and understanding of his instrument. Joel plays guitar with sensitivity that it, deserves.

Kristina Frazer: Vocals Singer/songwriter
Kristina Frazer’s captivating vocals embody the rich emotional tapestry of Jazz. From deeply soulful vulnerability that gets under your skin, to a voice that can turn on a dime with a growling sassiness that demands your attention. Over the years, Kristina has developed an outlet for her sassy sound, unleashing an original style, rich with the blues and soulful expression and a generous helping of warmth and humour. She is the quintessential jazz singer.
